Portrait of 121 Able Seaman (AB) Robert David Moffatt, a signaller in the Royal Australian Naval Reserve (RANR). Born in England in 1894, he worked as an engineer in Sydney and served on HMAS Australia. On 11 September 1914, whilst serving on HMAS Australia and as a member of the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (AN&MEF) in the advance from Kabakaul to Bitapaka, in New Britain, he was shot and wounded by a native sniper. AB Moffatt died the next morning from his wounds and was buried at sea. He was 20 years old.
